Hacking How Massive A Problem Is It?

By Daniel Turbin

Being a small enterprize owner myself, I have spent quite a bit of time speaking with fellow home entrepreneurs. What I've discovered over the course of those conversations is that most have no real plan when talking of network, information, or website security.

Home entrepreneurs typically have to wear a large number of hats, and are typically harried. Pulled in a dozen contrary directions at once, and unfortunately , this leaves only a little time to think strategically. Because of this, what thought is given to this type of thing is usually best specified as an after-thought.

Oh sure, many will pay at least some attention. I do not know of anyone that does not have at least a freeware version of an anti virus software running, and windows comes kitted out with a firewall, so that provides at least a little protection. Most off the shelf security programs offer at least a little customizability, and many sellers have password gates built into the services they provide, so without doing much of anything beyond following the trail of common sense, it's possible to assemble at least a basic data integrity shield.

Sadly , nearly 1 / 4 of the people I talked with didn't have anything formal prepared. More than a third did not even do regular info backups, and almost none had any kind of formalized process or procedures in place when it came to a recovery plan, in the eventuality of a security breech or ruinous information loss.

Given that a hacker succeeds in breeching a company's defenses three times a minute, somewhere worldwide these people's corporations appear to me to be a lot like ticking bombs. It's not truly an issue of "if," but a question of when.

Sooner or later, their number will come up, in what is probably the worst kind of lottery you can win, and when it does, their business will suffer. It might not collapse, however it could. Info loss and the loss of the trust of your customer base ( 2 common aftereffects of a successful hacking attack ), can cause real, insistent money impacts that it may take ages to get over.

Don't allow that to happen to you. Protect your information. Defend your business. If you don't have the expertise to do it alone get assistance from a professional independent security expert!
