The In-Game Culture Found In A Space MMO

By Pamela A. Go

The culture of space MMO games might seem odd to people who are not fans of this unique gaming genre but in reality that culture is growing rapidly as more and more players log on. There are literally hundreds of thousands of players signed up for massively multiplayer online games around the world, making this a big part of the modern gaming industry. The developers that dedicate themselves to create and manage these games have to constantly stay on top of changes in the game since the game's servers are constantly running and players can log into the game 24 hours a day from distinct parts of the world. Because these games are very different from console based RPG's that are made just for one player, a culture has developed online with its own terminology related to MMORPG's.

Gamers could easily be distracted away from a popular space MMO game if its content were to suddenly become dull, too predictable, or just overly cyclical; constant changes must be made. One of the ways they do this is by buffing and nerving specific character classes in the game; character classes refer to the roles that each character assumes during game play. Buffing refers to a good change, such as the granting of additional and beneficial abilities to a certain class of character. While some classes are buffed, others are nerved in that their skill sets are limited and some of their advantages are taken away through changes to the game.

Most space MMO games utilize a leveling system to help you track your progress through the game and gauge your character's abilities against those of other players. You can move your character to a higher level through a practice called grinding, which is basically the act of defeating one enemy after another until you reach a desired level. Nearly all online role playing games demand that players invest a bit of time into grinding their character if they hope to reach the highest levels, also known as endgame levels.

The basic element of online games is their social features, such as in game chat systems that let players talk to one another as they play. The culture of a game can be viewed clearly when you observe chats that are full of abbreviated forms of words related to locations, enemies, and challenges in the game.

Because space MMO games create communities of gamers, it is only natural that they create their own culture as well. You are certain to comprehend the terminology of the gaming culture more as you become a part of that community.
