Read Reviews On Kindle Fire The 8.9" 4G Model; Should You Just Buy An iPad?

By Adam Wells

The reviews that I have read on the Kindle Fire 8.9" 4G LTE Wireless model have been pretty weak. So, I decided to write my own.

Instead of buying an iPad 3, I wanted to save some money and go with something that does almost the same things as the iPad but with a cheaper price tag.

I really appreciate how this model was designed. When the Kindle is on landscape mode, the shortcut bar, flips to the right of the screen.

This eliminates the need to search for them. Landscape mode uses up a lot of vertical space anyway so it would make no sense to put the buttons at the bottom when in landscape mode.

On the previous model, the home button was located on the left but now they put it on the right. I don't particularly care for this but I can deal with it as long as my landscape space is freed up.

You can easily hold the Kindle 4G in one hand. Your arm won't feel as if it is weighted down. I don't like the look of the large bezel but this is another thing I guess I will have to get used to.

This Kindle model weighs in at 20oz. It is really lightweight. The backing feels good to the touch but thicker than an iPad. The larger screen and the volume buttons were improved on this model.

The Kindle 4G uses Dolby Digital Plus audio with speakers on both sides of the display. When you play music on the Kindle, it fills the room with a booming crisp sound that everyone and you will enjoy.

Your music can be stored in the Cloud but Amazon will only allow you to store 250 songs. When you watch movies or read e-books, you can learn more about them with the X-ray software that comes with your new Kindle.

It also has FreeTime which is great for children. I got bored with X-ray after I used it a couple of times. Instead of reading interesting features about the movie, I just wanted to watch and enjoy it. I do enjoy the FreeTime.

While they are enjoying the Kindle, I have some piece of mind in knowing what they are doing. Free Time mode emits a vibrant bright blue color in the background on the display which lets me know my children are viewing what they are supposed to be viewing.

To be sure everyone can play his/her favorite games, I can keep a close eye on their time. The Kindle 4G has a tough exterior that will stand up to child's play.

The platform that Amazon uses for the Kindle 4G is a customized version of Android 4.0. Now, this by no means replaces the iPad. It is just used by Amazon to sell you stuff. This platform is used by Amazon to make it easier for you to buy items from Amazon via your tablet/e-reader.

The Android's home screen is customizable with live wallpapers, widgets, and weather apps but the Kindle's home screen is not.

Another nice feature this model has is the immersive reading feature. With this feature, you can listen to a book being read while you are reading it simultaneously. When you want to rest your eyes for awhile and stop reading, you can listen to it being read to you.

The Silk browser runs smoothly and even faster than the previous model. Full screen mode can be turned on or you can turn it on "reading view" mode.

Background noise that takes up valuable space is cleared when in "reading view" mode. Uploading and downloading some MS Word documents and PDF files can be done quite easily.

The way the movies and books titles are displayed hasn't changed from the previous models. The Kindle 4G has not lost that library style which I like. The titles of books are clearly displayed on your bookshelf where you can easily access them.

Now this was a great innovative idea by Amazon. The Kindle 4G has Whisper-sync. What Whisper-sync allows you to do is access your media on any Kindle device. So, if you download an e-book on a Kindle HD 7", you can view it on the Kindle 4G. Isn't that just the coolest thing?

Skype works great while using wi-fi but it is not as functional as it is on your desktop. You can check your e-mail. You have access to yahoo, aol, and gmail. Facebook is already integrated on this model.

You can surf the Net, poke a friend on Facebook, or share photos with friends and family. The Kindle 8.9" 4G LTE Wireless is an excellent cross between a tablet an an e-reader without the high cost.
