The Greatest Myths About Toner

By Donald Anand

Most people feel bad throwing something like big, bulky, plastic toner cartridges in the trash when they are empty and therefore no longer useful. There are multiple benefits to reusing your old toner cartridges; you can save money, and the planet. The real draw for most people who opt to use refilled ink toner cartridges in their laser printer is the dramatic cost savings of using used over new.

Buying new toner cartridges for your laser printer from the original printer manufacturer is a recipe for burning through that office supply budget quicker than you can say, "are we out of toner?" Some other people might buy new cartridges from off-brand manufacturers; but the quality of these can be spotty. A refilled cartridge is still your original, perhaps OEM, cartridge, just rejuvenated and ready for another go!

For the mechanically minded or otherwise fearless, it's possible to get a kit that will help you refill your empty toner cartridges by yourself at home or at the office. Your local office or printer supply store will likely have everything you need to refill your toner cartridges; if not, there are a multitude of resources online to find what you're looking for. Make sure you get the right kind of toner though, and a toner of good quality; otherwise, the quality of your prints could be so bad as to make your prints unusable.

Keep in mind that for most toner cartridges, you're going to have to pour the toner in through a small hole, a process which will require precision. Some cartridges already have this hole, which needs to be opened carefully. Many cartridges don't have a hole for new toner, though; your toner refill kit should have instructions on how to make one. You'll then have to reseal the hole after you've put the new toner powder into the cartridge; you'll either already have a plug for this, or you'll have to find something else to seal it (most people use duct tape).

If you'd rather not fool around with all of this, most ink and toner stores also offer in-house refilling services. Simply drop off your empty cartridge at their store and pick them up later when they're ready to print all over again. Another plus of getting somebody to do it for you is that they'll probably not mess up your cartridge because they are experienced in refilling. No matter which method you end up choosing, you'll be happy to know that you've not only saved money on printing, but you've helped reduce the amount of plastic toner cartridges in circulation; always a good thing for mother earth!
